Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. These stones are formed when the urine becomes concentrated and allows the minerals and salts to crystallize. Kidney stones are of different types and appear in different colors. Black kidney stones are generally common. Most of them also appear in either yellow or brown. The size varies from a grain of sand to the size of a golf ball. These stones move and block the urinary tract, causing severe pain, which is a common symptom.
Causes
Kidney stones are formed not by a single cause, and a variety of factors may increase the risk of formation. Some of them include:
- Drinking too little water
- Obesity
- Weight loss surgery
- Foods that include high salt or sugar
- Family history
- Thyroid diseases
There are four types of kidney stones, and each type is caused by a different factor.
- Calcium oxalate: It is the most common type of kidney stone. This is caused by inadequate calcium and fluid intake.
- Uric acid: This is another common type of kidney stone. It is caused by the ingestion of foods having a high concentration of purines, such as organ meats and shellfish. This type tends to run in families.
- Struvite: These stones are less common and are caused by infections in the upper urinary tract.
- Cystine: These stones are rare and are formed due to inherited defect in the transport of the amino acid cystine.
